My Name is Jane O’Keeffe

MY NAME IS JANE O'KEEFFE AND I AM A SENIOR HR CONSULTANT AT DELOITTE. I ALSO VOLUNTEER WITH AMES, AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST PROVIDER OF HUMANITARIAN SETTLEMENT, EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT SERVICES FOR REFUGEES, MIGRANTS AND ASYLUM SEEKERS.

After doing a psychology degree at University, I found my calling in HR, which suits my deep fascination for people and what drives us. I am energised when making a positive difference for individuals. As a volunteer with AMES, I also help newly arrived migrants with their Australian job search and job readiness. I’m grateful to those in my life who have mentored me and value the opportunity to assist them.

Today I have been learning to Charleston at a swing dance class. Like the Woody Allen film, I have golden age thinking about Paris in the 20’s & 30’s and this extends to dancing! When living in London the Friday 6pm Eurostar from Kings Cross to Gare du Nord was a regular route with a bottle of wine and a Marks and Spencer sandwich.

My parents named me after famous literary Janes – Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Jane Austen. Luckily Persuasion by Jane Austen is one of my favourite novels.

When I was younger I wanted a name that could be shortened into a nickname - that was the ultimate term of endearment.

I agreed to be part of this project because I've always had name identity fascination and am curious about the choices we make in giving names to our children reflecting the things that are important to us. I feel attached to my name because my mother gave it to me.

I'm not plain Jane ... I'm a daughter, sister, aunty, lover, friend and part of the sisterhood of many great Janes.

"I feel attached to my name because my mother gave it to me."
