MY NAME IS JANE JERVIS-READ AND I AM A WRITER AND MOTHER. I FINISHED MY NOVEL A WEEK BEFORE MY DAUGHTER WAS BORN. THAT WAS SEVEN AND A HALF MONTHS AGO. SINCE THEN I'VE BEEN TAKING CARE OF HER AND WRITING A NEW ONE ON THE FLOOR OF THE BEDROOM AT NIGHT. MY LAPTOP PLAYS WHITE NOISE TO HELP HER SLEEP, SO THE SOUND OF IT COVERS THE CLACKING OF THE KEYS.
Today I took my seven month old to her first theatre show. She heckled the performer. It was wonderful.
My mum has a few good friends named Jane (one of them who is in this project - Jane Witchell). So I guess the name had happy associations for them.
When I was a kid I sometimes wished I were a different kind of ape, swinging through the trees of the forest. I don't think any of them are called Jane.
I think there's something elemental about the name Jane, like nothing's been added and there's no room to make it fancy. I kind of like that.
I agreed to be part of this project because I wanted to do something different from my usual days at home with my baby.
I'm not plain Jane ...I'm a link in the Jane-chain.
